Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to examine, analyze and interpret tax accounting records for the purpose of determining compliance with federal and state laws, statutes, rulings, regulations, and generally accepted accounting and auditing standards. This position involves analysis and evaluation of accounting systems, accounting records, and third party documentation to prepare and present audit reports and focuses primarily, but not limited to Gross Receipts tax.

How does it get done?

This position conducts tax audits of small to moderate-sized businesses and individual tax payers, independently or as a member of an audit team; exams and tests ledgers, journals, and other source documents (i.e. invoices, cash sales tickets, charge slips, bank statements, and/or cash register tapes); verifies the accuracy of tax payers' tax reporting against source documents; plans the course of action for auditing the taxpayer and it analyzes, interprets and applies appropriate tax laws, regulations and rulings to situations revealed during the course of the audit. This position also evaluates taxpayer accounting systems and internal controls for adequacy and accuracy.

The Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate has experience in:

  • Examining and testing ledgers, journals and other source documents.

  • Analyzing, interpreting and applying appropriate tax laws, regulations and rulings.

  • Verifying the accuracy of taxpayers' tax reporting against source documents.

  • Preparing technical reports and letters to varied audiences utilizing Microsoft Word.

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.

This position is a Pay Band 65.

Tax Auditor II

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Taxation to include twelve (12) semester hours of accounting or auditing (three (3) semester hours in finance or business law may substitute for up to three (3) semester hours of accounting or auditing). Four (4) years of experience in Auditing, Accounting, Taxation, Collections, or Finance may substitute for the required Bachelor's degree.

Employment Requirements:

Must be current with all tax reporting/payments. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results. Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Interacting with the public. High pressure/stress situations. Some travel is required.
