The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) Behavioral Health Care Line is seeking qualified applicants to join our team. We are seeking a full-time Physician Assistants to provide comprehensive initial mental health / psychiatric assessments and ongoing psychiatric care as part of an interdisciplinary team and in a variety of settings. Care may be provided face to face or via clinical video-teleconferencing depending on the need and setting. The incumbent uses advanced clinical judgment and evidence-based treatment strategies to provide care to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including treatment with psychotropic medications, brief psychotherapy, case management and consultation with other mental health professionals. The incumbent should have experience in working with patients who have a variety of mental health conditions.

Opportunities for employment may be available in multiple areas:
Outpatient Mental Health: The incumbent will provide mental health care for a panel of Veterans in the Outpatient Mental Health at the Raymond G. Murphy VAMC or Community Based Outpatient Clinics (on site or virtual) located throughout New Mexico. Day tour, Monday-Friday.
Same Day Access/Gap Coverage: The incumbent will provide same day access for established outpatient mental health patients and provide provider gap coverage. Day tour Monday-Friday
Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI): The incumbent will work collaboratively with primary care providers to provide outpatient mental health services to Veterans within the primary care setting. The primary focus of this position is psychotropic medication evaluation and management. Work Schedule:Day tour, Monday-Friday.
Mental Health Urgent Care/Emergency Psychiatry (BEACON Team): The incumbent will provide walk-in mental health services for Veterans who do not have an established mental health provider, or have urgent mental health needs. The incumbent provides emergency psychiatric consultation in the Emergency Department, including psychiatric evaluations and admissions. Incumbents will also work with the psychiatric consult liaison team as needed. This team provides services 7 am-11 pm 365 days a year using variable tours.
Psychiatric Inpatient Services: The incumbent will provide medical and psychiatric evaluations, including admission history and physicals and treatment planning for Veterans who require inpatient psychiatric stabilization. Tours include weekend, evening and night coverage, 10-12 hour shifts.

Basic Requirements: * Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. * Education or Training. The candidate must meet the following: (1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and (2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. * Licensure. (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. (2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years. * English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Grade Determinations * Full Grade Experience / Education. None beyond the basic requirements above. * Intermediate Grade Experience / Education. In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, PA candidates must have: 1. 1 year of professional practice as a PA; or 2. Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or 3. Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. d) A Doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U. S. Department of Education. * Senior Grade Experience / Education. In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, PA candidates must have: 1. 3 years of professional practice as a PA; or 2. 2 years of professional practice as a PA and successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or 3. 2 years of professional practice as a PA and a Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or 4. A Doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U. S. Department of Education. * Chief Grade Experience / Education.In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, candidates must meet the following: 1. After 5 years of professional practice as a PA, candidates must able to demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise, leadership ability, and the ability to function with a high degree of autonomy. Further, the PA candidate for Chief Grade will have demonstrated all the requirements of one or more of the following categories: Management/Administrative, Clinical Proficiency, Professional Development and Research. 2. The minimum education for this grade is a Master's Degree from a PA training program accredited by ARC-PA or in a health-related field of study. However, experience as a PA may be substituted for the Master's degree where an applicant has an equivalent knowledge of the profession and has successfully undertaken a combination of difficult or complex assignments in several clinical, administrative, research and educational arenas which required a high degree of competence. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-8 Physician Assistant Qualification Standard.
Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over): Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted.
