Sandia National Laboratories Experimental Pulsed-Power Scientist (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to conduct join our team in pulsed-power-accelerator physics research. The principal goals of these activities will be to improve the understanding of accelerator physics; apply the understanding to the development of advanced accelerator technology; use the technology to upgrade Z and other pulsed-power machines; and establish the technical foundation upon which we will build next-generation pulsed-power accelerators in support of the U.S. Department of Energy’s national-security mission.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Conduct accelerator-physics experiments on Sandia’s 85-terawatt 26-megampere Z accelerator and other pulsed-power machines
- Develop new pulsed-power components, systems, and accelerators
- Develop mathematical models of pulsed-power components, systems, and accelerators
- Perform analytic calculations and numerical simulations
- Publish results in premier peer-reviewed physics and engineering journals
The experimental component of the work outlined above will be conducted in pulsed-power laboratory environments, and will involve hazards that include, but are not limited to, the following: high voltage, high current, high-energy capacitors, high-power lasers, x-ray radiation, neutron radiation, radioactive materials (such as tritium and activated stainless steel), nuclear materials (such as plutonium and uranium), beryllium, high gas pressures, vacuum systems, chemical explosives, explosive gases (such as hydrogen), asphyxiating gases (such as sulfur hexafluoride, nitrogen, helium, and hydrogen), cryogenic systems, toxic chemicals, chemical solvents, elevated work platforms, ladders, confined spaces, large and heavy pieces of equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, open water tanks, open oil tanks, powered hand tools, disk grinders, and manual tools.
- Bachelor’s and Master’s in engineering, physics, or a related field plus 2 years’ experience; or a Bachelor’s and PhD in engineering, physics, or a related field
- Experience designing and fielding pulsed-power components and systems
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance
- Experience applying the principles of engineered safety to laboratory activities
- Experience in the field of advanced accelerator physics
- Experience working in a fast paced and technically challenging research environment
- Experience working as a team member in large state-of-the-art pulsed-power facilities
- Experience designing and fielding advanced pulsed-power components and systems
- Experience working with electrical, mechanical, pressure, vacuum, and diagnostic systems
- Experience defining and solving challenging, complex problems in a timely manner
- A publication record that includes first-author peer-reviewed journal articles in engineering, physics, or a related field
- Advanced experimental, analytical, and computational skills
- Advanced interpersonal skills
- Active DoE Q clearance
The Advanced Accelerator Physics Department develops the world's most advanced pulsed-power-accelerator technology. We apply the technology to the development of superpower accelerators; i.e., those that deliver a multi-terawatt electromagnetic pulse to a physics package that serves as the load of the accelerator. Various types of loads are fielded by the user community, who conduct inertial-confinement-fusion, material-physics, weapon-effects, radiation-physics, laboratory-astrophysics, and other high-energy-density-physics experiments in support of a wide variety of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs.
We conduct accelerator-physics experiments on Sandia's Z machine, which generates an 85 terawatt 26-megampere 100-nanosecond electrical-power pulse. We also conduct experiments on a number of other pulsed-power machines with peak electrical powers that range from 5 gigawatts to 500 gigawatts. The experiments are establishing the technical foundation that will be necessary to develop next-generation pulsed-power accelerators, such as Thor, Neptune, and Jupiter. Thor will be a 190-kilojoule 1.2-terawatt pulsed-power accelerator that generates magnetic pressures as high as 200 gigapascals for advanced material-physics experiments. Neptune will be an 11 megajoule 50-terawatt machine that generates pressures on the order of 2 terapascals. Jupiter will be a 140-megajoule 960-terawatt accelerator that delivers 67 megamperes and 9 megajoules to a physics load. The principal goal of Jupiter will be to achieve high-yield thermonuclear fusion; i.e., a fusion yield that exceeds the electrical energy initially stored by the machine.
